My Journey in Dentistry: Embracing a Fulfilling Career in Oral Health

Alfiya Avatar

Like many aspiring medical students, my journey began with the hope of securing an MBBS seat. However, life had other plans, and I found myself pursuing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) instead. At first, it felt like a deviation from my original goal, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that dentistry was not just a profession—it was my true calling. Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found a career that aligns with my passion for health and patient care.

During my years at Chettinad Dental College, I quickly recognized the immense impact that oral health has on overall well-being. As I immersed myself in the various disciplines of dentistry, I developed a deep appreciation for preventive care, patient education, and hands-on treatment. What began as an unexpected path has now become a lifelong passion, one that I am proud to call my own.

Over the years, my roles as a Dental Hygienist and General Dentist have allowed me to refine my skills in clinical care, infection control, patient management, and communication. These experiences have shaped me into a practitioner who values empathy and personalized care as much as technical expertise. In parallel, my work as a Medical Content Analyst and freelance academic writer has enabled me to educate a wider audience on the importance of oral health. Writing for virtual healthcare platforms and publications has deepened my understanding of how critical accurate information is for patient empowerment and public health.

I’ve also extended my love for education through my YouTube channel, Learn BDS With Me, where I share insights and tips with dental students and professionals. This platform has allowed me to simplify complex dental topics and provide accessible learning resources to aspiring dentists.

As I prepare for the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) in 2025, I am excited to take my career to new heights, knowing that every step of my journey has been a rewarding one. Dentistry, though not my initial choice, has turned out to be the best decision of my life—a career that continually inspires me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
